A Polish, Jewish family's struggle to survive the atrocities of the Nazi regime. It is a well written book that follows each of the family members' individual fight and path to survive in different countries and circumstances. Even though one knows about the unimaginable cruelties and crimes committed against primarily (if certainly not only) people of the Jewish faith, books like these are important and I very much enjoyed (if you can call it that) this one, not least of all because amidst all the horror and loss and anguish there is love and there is hope.
A story well told, I find that , in general, there is little written dealing with the aftermath of the war e.g. refugees who could not return to their houses as other families had just moved in, where did people go and how they were helped. Did countries such as America open their borders, etc. This book deals with this which I appreciate. Thank you.
This story follows the Kurc family - 3 generations in total - starting in 1939. WW II is about to being, and this family is Jewish. They live in the town of Radom, Poland, but soon they are split up. Some flee, some are forced into exile, and some are sent to concentration camps. Each person has a story to share, and their struggle to survive is propelled that some day they will see each other again.This was the first book I have read about WWII where the characters were from Poland. I have read how bad it was in Poland, but to read the horror on these pages made it that much more forefront in my mind. The story, over all, was good. Each chapter dove into the lives of certain members of this family, and told the story of what was happening to them on a personal level. But each chapter was also connecting those characters to the rest of their family. All of them working on a common goal to get back to each other no matter what.If I had to give any criticism about the book is that it was a bit too long. I found my mind wondering at some points - feeling that things were too drawn out. This made it a little slow moving, and some chapters were better than others. Some of the stories were heart wrenching and I couldn't stop reading until the end of the chapter. Yet others dragged.Overwall- good book. I would recommend it with the knowledge that there might be times where you want to skim.
Georgia Hunter's novel, "We Were the Lucky Ones", does depict a family of Polish Jews who were very lucky, indeed. Their nuclear family - parents and five children - all survived the Holocaust, and ended up living all over the world. "Lucky Ones" is not exactly a novel, because Hunter uses her mother's family as the basis of the story, giving real names and situations. She was smart to write the book this way, as she seems to have written non-fiction with the license of creating her own dialog.She begins each chapter with a short report on what was going on in the war.Hunter begins her book in Radom, Poland, a city in central Poland with a large and thriving pre-war Jewish community. The Kurc family was celebrating Passover,1939, with four of their five children and their husbands around the table. The only child missing was Addy, who was living in Toulouse, France, and couldn't return home to join in the celebration. For the next six years as the winds of war tossed Polish Jews from the ghettos set up by the German occupiers, to the killing fields, and finally to Treblinka and Auschwitz, the Kurcs fought in the resistance armies, labored in the concentration camps, and were unbelievably lucky in their fate. (This is not a surprise to the readers as they're told that the family survived; the book tells their stories.)Georgia Hunter is a good writer and the story of the family's survival is presented well. She is the daughter of Addy's daughter, who was born after the war to Addy and an American woman he met while living in Rio. The Kurc's tale is an interesting one.
